U.S. and Mexico officials convene to address border security and migrant crisis

The Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Troy Miller, met with top-ranking Mexican officials on Friday, September 22, to discuss border security issues and the growing number of migrant encounters. Miller emphasized the commitment of the CBP to control the situation at the border.

During the meeting, key personnel from Mexico's Secretariat of Foreign Relations, National Institute of Migration, National Guard, Secretariat of National Defense, the Chihuahua State Police, Ferromex, the Mayor of Ciudad Juarez, and the Governor of Chihuahua gathered to address the escalating irregular migration and maintain lawful trade and travel.

One of the topics discussed was the coordination between the United States and Mexico to decrease irregular migration and combat the activities of smugglers. Miller highlighted the importance of joint operations, particularly "mirrored patrols" with local Mexican law enforcement agencies.

Miller expressed his gratitude for the efforts in preventing hazardous migrant travel on railcars. The allocation of increased resources to process inadmissible noncitizens was also discussed, as it has an impact on CBP's enforcement capabilities and port entry operations.

In a related development, the CBP announced the resumption of operations at the international railway crossing bridge in Eagle Pass, Texas. This demonstrates the continued partnership between the CBP and Mexican authorities in ensuring regional and railway safety.

The dialogues in Ciudad Juarez signify an ongoing commitment from the United States and Mexico to tackle the challenges posed by increased migration and security risks. Both countries reaffirmed their dedication to border security while respecting human rights and facilitating legal trade and travel.
