As part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Department of Commerce hosted a panel discussion on the intersectionality of AI and its impact on hiring people with disabilities. The panel emphasized that AI systems have the potential to serve all individuals, and it is a shared responsibility to develop this technology for the benefit of society.

Chief Information Officer Andre Mendes highlighted the importance of recognizing that humanity is a spectrum and that everyone has intersectionality beyond their job roles. In line with this, Executive Order 13960 requires agencies to prepare an inventory of current and planned AI use cases and share them with the public to promote further development.

The Department of Commerce has an AI Center of Excellence that has created an inventory of Commerce AI use cases to comply with the executive order and increase collaboration on AI initiatives. Additionally, the Department has established nine principles that agencies must follow when designing, developing, acquiring, and using AI in the federal government. Transparency in the use of AI is seen as crucial for fostering public trust and confidence while protecting privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties.

The press release also highlighted the Department of Commerce's mission to create economic opportunities for all communities, including people with disabilities. Currently, the Commerce workforce includes 10.9% of individuals with disabilities, falling below the 12% benchmark set by the Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission.
