U.S. and Japan have goals to enhance economic resilience and protect emerging technologies

The United States and Japan had economic leaders meet in San Francisco on Nov. 14, where the Countries discussed how to improve the protection of new technologies being developed and how to strengthen each economy.

According to a press release by the U.S. Department of Commerce, protecting computing technology and biotechnology are key goals between the two countries. The three segments that have the most importance under computing technology are semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum information science and technology. The Japanese and United States governments plan to continue closely monitoring global semiconductor supply and demand trends to strengthen supply chains and enhance early warning systems for semiconductor supply disruptions. Japan will build upon discussions under the Joint Task Force on next-generation semiconductors and encourage cooperation between Japan's Leading-edge Semiconductor Technology Center and the U.S. National Semiconductor Technology Center. They will also promote talent development involving academia and national research institutes and start a collaborative project. They will lead discussions on AI with like-minded partners in international fora, including the G7 Hiroshima AI Process. Additionally, Japan will also revise the MOU between NIST and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, expanding cooperation to quantum technology and launching joint discussions on shared research interests and international standardization activities.

Promoting clean energy technology, creating critical minerals, and advancing communications technology are additional goals of the two countries for long term growth as stated by same press release by U.S Department of Commerce. Both nations committed to strengthening battery supply chains while promoting innovative clean energy technologies like perovskite solar cells, floating offshore wind, advanced nuclear reactors. Furthermore, they aim at supporting international standards evaluation methods fostering global market growth for secure sustainable resilient clean energy techs. Accelerating adoption 5G networks featuring Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) is also within their plans for secure commercially viable telecommunications approach in global markets.

Finally both energy security food security are commitments that these countries intend improve upon. Both US Japan are committed to reducing their reliance on Russian energy promoting rules-based, open fair transparent predictable non-discriminatory trade for sustainable agriculture food systems. They have plans to support development deployment advanced nuclear reactors promote zero-emission renewable energy resources and support private sector efforts to strengthen hydrogen production utilization. Their goal is to reduce methane emissions across sectors support methane emissions reduction third countries.
