Israel and Hamas say they will uphold a cease-fire for hostages to be released, however the situation is likely to remain fluid until the cease-fire begins. This tense political climate primarily revolves around Gaza and heavily involves key figures in the U.S. Department of State.

The U.S. Department of State (DOS) has issued a detailed statement about this matter. According to a news release from the DOS, Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken said he hopes that a cease-fire will bring Americans being held hostage home.

The Secretary further elaborated on his concerns and relief regarding this issue. "The United States welcomes the deal to release 50 hostages, including American citizens, held by Hamas since its Oct. 7 attack on Israel," he said." I cannot imagine the ordeal that each of these individuals has endured over the past few weeks, and I am thankful that they will be reunited with their loved ones soon."

In addition to expressing his empathy towards those affected, Blinken also shed light on how this deal was achieved. Blinken added in the release that a potential cease-fire was the result of tireless diplomacy by DOS, along with other entities in the federal government.

Blinken didn't miss out on acknowledging and appreciating those who helped achieve this milestone. "I appreciate the leadership and ongoing partnership of Egypt and Qatar in this work," said Blinken. "I also thank the government of Israel for supporting a humanitarian pause that will facilitate the transfer of hostages to safety and allow additional humanitarian assistance to reach Palestinian civilians in Gaza."

However, Blinken stressed that there's still more work ahead before achieving complete peace in Gaza. Blinken said the proposed deal marks significant progress, but there is still work to do as long as Hamas continues to hold hostages in Gaza.

While assuring his relentless efforts, Blinken reiterated his utmost priority. "My highest priority is the safety and security of Americans overseas, and we will continue our efforts to secure the release of every hostage and their swift reunification with their families," he said.

In the meantime, other prominent figures within DOS are also actively involved in these diplomatic affairs. DOS Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that Blinken had recently spoken with Israeli War Cabinet member Minister Benny Gantz concerning humanitarian assistance into Gaza, along with securing the release of hostages.

According to Miller, Blinken stressed on multiple critical issues during this conversation. "Secretary Blinken stressed the urgent need for affirmative steps to de-escalate tensions in the West Bank, including by confronting rising levels of settler extremist violence," he said. "Secretary Blinken stressed that the United States remains committed to advancing a two-state solution."
