DOS says US remains committed to providing security assistance support to Israel

The ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has led to hopes that all hostages will be released. This comes as high-ranking US officials engage in diplomatic discussions with Israeli representatives.

As diplomatic efforts continue, According to a U.S. Department of State (DOS) news release, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III called Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant to discuss the ongoing Israel Defense Forces' operational pause in Gaza.

In these discussions, Austin told Gallant that the U.S. was committed to providing security assistance support to Israel while emphasizing that humanitarian aid into Gaza must be enhanced, according to the media release. Moreover, Austin added that the U.S. desires for the conflict to remain between Israel and Hamas and not spill over to neighboring countries. Austin also provided updates on U.S. efforts to protect its forces and interests across the Middle East.

Moving towards other key communications, Earlier this month, DOS Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken had recently spoken with Israeli War Cabinet member Minister Benny Gantz concerning humanitarian assistance into Gaza, along with securing the release of hostages.

The discussions around de-escalating tensions were comprehensive, "Secretary Blinken stressed the urgent need for affirmative steps to de-escalate tensions in the West Bank, including by confronting rising levels of settler extremist violence," he said. "Secretary Blinken stressed that the United States remains committed to advancing a two-state solution."

On a more hopeful note, "The United States welcomes the deal to release 50 hostages, including American citizens, held by Hamas since its Oct. 7 attack on Israel," he said. "I cannot imagine the ordeal that each of these individuals has endured over the past few weeks, and I am thankful that they will be reunited with their loved ones soon."

Commending the efforts of all parties, Blinken added in the release that the cease-fire was the result of tireless diplomacy by DOS, along with the other entities in the federal government.

In conclusion, "I appreciate the leadership and ongoing partnership of Egypt and Qatar in this work," said Blinken. "I also thank the government of Israel for supporting a humanitarian pause that will facilitate the transfer of hostages to safety and allow additional humanitarian assistance to reach Palestinian civilians in Gaza."
