The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have joined forces to create a blueprint for AI developers. This collaboration aims to provide guidance on cybersecurity measures for developers in the emerging field of artificial intelligence.
"@DHSgov is leading the way in the safe and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence to further our mission to protect the homeland. I am proud that our workforce continues to innovate to deliver for the American people.", said Alejandro N. Mayorkas.
A joint effort between these organizations has resulted in publishing "Guidelines for Secure AI System Development". The guidelines are designed to help developers make cybersecurity decisions throughout their projects, with input from 21 global agencies, including all G7 members. This initiative marks a significant global agreement on security standards for AI development.
Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas emphasized the critical stage in AI development. He stated, "We are at an inflection point in the development of artificial intelligence, which may well be the most consequential technology of our time. Cybersecurity is key to building AI systems that are safe, secure, and trustworthy," He went on to underscore how these guidelines laid out by CISA, NCSC and other international partners offer a practical route towards embedding 'secure by design' principles within AI systems at every step, thereby making it crucial for developers to safeguard customers throughout system design and development processes.
According to DHS's release statement, CISA has consistently been an advocate for outlining essential recommendations regarding AI system development while emphasizing adherence to 'secure by design' principles.
The significance of this guideline was highlighted by CISA Director Jen Easterly when she stated that "The release of the Guidelines for Secure AI System Development marks a key milestone in our collective commitment—by governments across the world—to ensure the development and deployment of artificial intelligence capabilities that are secure by design."
