Walmart set to open two new Sam's Clubs in St. Louis and Minneapolis

Walmart has unveiled plans to establish two new distribution centers for Sam's Club, set to commence operations in 2024. These facilities, located outside of St. Louis and Minneapolis, form part of a multi-year growth strategy aimed at transforming the supply chain at Sam's Club.

According to a press release by Walmart, the company's multi-year growth plan involves the opening of 30 new clubs across the U.S. over the next several years. The retail giant also intends to significantly invest in its supply chain through the establishment of new distribution centers nationwide. In 2023 alone, five new supply chain and distribution centers were launched. In line with sustainability efforts, these upcoming Sam's Club locations will be constructed using zero emissions strategies and energy-efficient LED lighting.

Joseph Godsey, SVP of Supply Chain at Sam’s Club, expressed his enthusiasm about this expansion in the press release. He said, "We’re excited to extend our supply chain network and capabilities for our clubs and members in the region." Godsey further explained that their supply chain network is being designed to enhance their omni-channel experience while increasing efficiencies and delivery speed wherever their members choose to shop and receive their products. He credited historic comparable sales growth and a record rise in membership over the last two years as enabling factors for Sam's Club's investment in expanding its physical footprint.

The press release also revealed that Sam's Club has revamped its 600 clubs by enhancing member experiences and integrating advanced in-club technology. The forthcoming clubs will be expanded by an additional 160,000 square feet each, boasting features such as a seafood/sushi island, full-service floral section, walk-in coolers, larger healthcare spaces, fuel stations, and liquor offerings. The omni-fulfillment footprint will also be extended to provide dedicated spaces for curbside pickup, delivery services, and ship from club orders. The St. Louis area location is slated for a January 2024 opening, promising to create over 100 jobs across the region and serving as both a distribution and fulfillment center. The Minneapolis location is set to open its doors in March 2024, creating an estimated 80 jobs.
