Washington - Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's top aide, Melissa DeRosa, is facing scrutiny from the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic regarding her alleged involvement in the COVID-19 nursing home death cover-up. Subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup and Representative Nicole Malliotakis are demanding answers from DeRosa after her attorney claimed that she was not involved in New York's deadly COVID-19 nursing home directive.
In a letter to DeRosa, Wenstrup and Malliotakis highlighted the contradictions between her attorney's claims and the information publicly reported about her role in the Cuomo administration during the pandemic. They pointed out that DeRosa had publicly discussed and defended the Cuomo administration's nursing home order, arguing that it was consistent with federal guidelines. However, the order was later found to be inconsistent with federal guidance.
Wenstrup and Malliotakis emphasized that they would not allow DeRosa to evade responsibility for her alleged efforts to aid Cuomo's fatal directive and conceal the true nursing home mortality rate. They reiterated their previous request for documents and invited DeRosa to testify under penalty of criminal prosecution if she was truly not involved in influencing or implementing these deadly policies.
The lawmakers asserted that it was not DeRosa or her attorney's right to determine whether she could contribute to the inquiry, as that rested solely with the Select Subcommittee. They also disputed the factual basis of her assertions and stated that she owed answers to the families who lost loved ones in New York nursing homes.
"Any assertion that you were not involved in issues regarding the Order grossly mischaracterizes publicly available information and your own representations. In fact, you were in a position to understand the Cuomo Administration's policy regarding nursing homes from the very beginning," wrote Wenstrup and Malliotakis.
The Select Subcommittee has been conducting a thorough investigation into the handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes. They have previously sent letters to Governor Kathy Hochul, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and other state officials, as well as issued subpoenas in an effort to uncover the truth.
The letter to DeRosa is the latest step in their pursuit of transparency and accountability. The Subcommittee is determined to get to the bottom of what happened in New York's nursing homes during the pandemic and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
