A 28-year-old man was detained with the assistance of Sault Ste Marie Border Patrol Agents after he brandished a knife at officers from the Bay Mills Police Department. The agents were summoned to aid in the arrest.
Chief Patrol Agent at U.S. Border Patrol, Robert Danley, stated, "Sault Ste Marie Border Patrol Agents assisted Bay Mills PD and other agencies with a suspect who pulled a knife on officers when he was approached for trespassing. Agents and officers used non-lethal tactics to subdue and disarm the subject."
As per a news release issued by the Bay Mills Police Department to SooLeader.com, the incident transpired on the morning of Dec. 9. Police were responding to a trespassing call in the 12000 block of Lakeshore Drive on the Bay Mills Indian Reservation. Upon sighting the man, he brandished a knife and proceeded to ascend onto the deck at the rear of the house.
The release further elaborates that border patrol agents played a crucial role in apprehending the subject by employing mace and tasers as he refused to relinquish his weapon. Once restrained, the man was transported for medical and mental health evaluation at MyMichigan Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. As events unfolded, several institutions including Bay Mills Community College, Tribal Administration and Ojibwe Charter School were placed under lockdown as a precautionary measure.
The man is reportedly a resident of Bay Mills; however, his identity has not been disclosed by the police department as per the release. He was arrested on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault on another officer and resisting lawful arrest after allegedly kicking a sheriff’s deputy during his apprehension. Other law enforcement bodies assisting in this operation included Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police.
