Yuma Chief Patrol Agent, Sean L. McGoffin, recently used the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his admiration for agents who consistently strive to maintain safety in the region. McGoffin highlighted that the challenging landscape surrounding Yuma does not discourage these agents.
In his words, "Rocky and remote terrain doesn’t inhibit determined #YumaStation agents from getting the job done! Agents assigned to Yuma Sector’s Mobile Response Team tracked a group of Mexican nationals through the Gila Mountains and arrested them for illegal entry. #photofromthefield." This quote is attributed to Sean L. McGoffin, Chief Patrol Agent at U.S. Border Patrol.
McGoffin's post followed reports that two U.S. Border Patrol agents had been severely injured when a Ford F-150 truck crashed into them near an immigration checkpoint in the Yuma area, as reported by AZCentral.com. The news outlet noted that the truck was speeding when it collided with a car and subsequently crashed into another car, crash barriers, and the agents operating the checkpoint. It was also reported that a passenger in the truck was partially ejected and a total of eight people received medical care at nearby hospitals and Phoenix trauma centers.
A spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) expressed gratitude towards those who provided assistance during this incident: "The U.S. Border Patrol would like to thank all the first responders and trauma personnel who worked tirelessly through the night to deliver lifesaving care to all involved, and to the local community and those across the country for their support of our agents and their families during this time."
The article also mentioned that state and federal law enforcement agencies responded swiftly to assist those involved in the accident.
In response to this event, a statement was posted on X by the Border Patrol union: "Asking for your thoughts and prayers on behalf of two agents in critical condition after an event at a checkpoint on Interstate 8 between Wellton and Yuma, Arizona yesterday evening. We have a lot of brave agents who risk their lives every day trying to protect this nation."
