House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan are launching an investigation into whether President Biden attempted to obstruct the ongoing impeachment inquiry by influencing his son, Hunter Biden, to defy congressional subpoenas. The investigation comes after an official White House statement suggested that President Biden had prior knowledge of Hunter Biden's plan to ignore the subpoenas.
The letter addressed to White House Counsel Edward Siskel, written by Chairmen Comer and Jordan, calls for the submission of all documents and communications involving the Executive Office of the President concerning Hunter Biden's deposition.
"In light of an official statement from the White House that President Biden was aware in advance that his son, Hunter Biden, would knowingly defy two congressional subpoenas, we are compelled to examine as part of our impeachment inquiry whether the President engaged in a conspiracy to obstruct a proceeding of Congress," wrote Chairmen Comer and Jordan.
The House Committees on Oversight and Accountability and Judiciary had issued subpoenas to Hunter Biden for a deposition scheduled for December 13, 2023. However, Hunter Biden did not appear for the deposition, instead making a public statement on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol with his attorney and Representative Eric Swalwell. During this statement, he indicated that he would not comply with the subpoenas.
The White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, later confirmed that President Biden was "certainly familiar with what his son was going to say," suggesting that the President had advanced knowledge of Hunter Biden's decision to defy the subpoenas.
Chairmen Comer and Jordan argue that there is substantial evidence linking Hunter Biden's business activities to his father and that the President has made false claims about his knowledge and involvement in these ventures. They highlight that the President had claimed to have had no interaction with his son's business partners, which they assert is untrue.
"In light of this evidence, the fact that the President had advanced awareness that Mr. Biden would defy the Committees' subpoenas raises a troubling new question that we must examine: whether the President corruptly sought to influence or obstruct the Committees' proceeding by preventing, discouraging, or dissuading his son from complying with the Committees' subpoenas. Such conduct could constitute an impeachable offense," continued Chairmen Comer and Jordan.
The investigation aims to shed light on whether President Biden sought to obstruct the impeachment proceedings by influencing his son's cooperation.
