U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced on May 5 that the U.S. Forest Service has signed a grant agreement with the State of Maine to release $10 million in funding to prevent an outbreak of spruce budworm in Maine.
This announcement comes as efforts continue to protect Maine's forest products industry and preserve jobs across all counties. The funding was secured by Collins in the Fiscal Year 2026 Interior appropriations bill and follows her recent push at a hearing for quick action during a critical window for spraying.
Collins said, “Eighty-eight percent of Maine is covered by forests. Our forest products industry supports approximately 30,000 jobs across all of Maine's 16 counties. I am pleased to announce that the $10 million of funding for spruce budworm treatment can now be deployed in a timely manner so that the spraying can occur when it is most effective to preserve this vital industry.”
The Senate Appropriations Committee oversees federal expenditures as mandated by law, ensuring accountability in public money management and managing legislation related to federal funding, conducting hearings on spending proposals, and overseeing government programs according to the official website.
The committee draws its authority from the U.S. Constitution and has historically influenced federal spending through oversight of budgets and programs such as homeland security appropriations acts, also according to the official website.
Looking ahead, officials say this timely deployment aims to maximize effectiveness against spruce budworm infestations while supporting local economies tied closely to forestry.
