The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has announced that it successfully provided permanent housing to 46,552 homeless veterans in 2023, surpassing its initial goal of housing 38,000 veterans.
According to a press release by the VA, this achievement represents an overachievement of their 2023 target by 22.5%. The task of finding housing for homeless veterans has been a primary concern for both the VA and the current administration. A significant aspect of the Unity Agenda Act was to distribute funding across all regions to extend more support to veterans nationwide. Since 2020, there has been a decrease in the homelessness rate among veterans by 4%. The VA recently announced two grant opportunities aimed at assisting veterans experiencing homelessness: the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Grants and the Legal Services for Homeless Veterans and Veterans At-Risk for Homelessness Grants.
In another press release from the VA, it was revealed that Los Angeles housed the highest number of veterans, exceeding its annual goal by 19.3% and providing homes to 1,790 veterans. The VA is implementing a 'housing first' approach which prioritizes offering support necessary for veterans to maintain their housing. This assistance includes job opportunity searches, legal and educational aid, as well as healthcare services. This marks the second consecutive year that over 40,000 homeless veterans have been accommodated with permanent housing.
"No Veteran should ever experience the tragedy and indignity of homelessness. More than 46,000 formerly homeless Veterans are going to sleep tonight in good, safe, stable homes — and there’s nothing more important than that," said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. "While this is an important step forward, we’re not stopping here — we’re going to keep pushing until every Veteran has a safe, stable place to call home in this country they fought to defend."
