The American Gaming Association (AGA) has reported that commercial gaming revenue in the United States reached a total of $66.5 billion in 2023. This figure represents a 10% increase from the $60.5 million generated in 2022, marking the third consecutive year of record revenue.

According to an AGA press release, data derived from AGA’s Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker reveals that online gaming revenue in 2023 increased by 22.9% from the previous year, accounting for $6.2 billion in revenue. Revenue from brick-and-mortar casino slots and table games rose by 3.3%, generating a record $49.4 billion in 2023. Sports betting grossed a handle of $119.8 billion, reflecting a 27.8% increase, while sportsbooks recorded $10.9 billion, up by 44.5%. The press release attributed this growth primarily to market maturation in states such as Massachusetts and Ohio.

"From the traditional casino experience to online options, American adults’ demand for gaming is at an all-time high," said Bill Miller, AGA President and CEO, in the press release. "Sustaining our momentum will take unified industry efforts around combating pernicious illegal operators and growing responsible gambling efforts in tandem with the growth of the legal market—both of which the AGA is committed to lead on throughout 2024."

The same press release also revealed that the top five gaming markets in 2023 were the Las Vegas Strip (first), New Jersey (second), Chicagoland (third), Baltimore-Washington, D.C. (fourth), and the Mississippi Gulf Coast (fifth).

In addition, according to the AGA press release, state and local governments received approximately $14.4 billion in direct gaming revenue taxes in 2023—a nearly 10% increase compared to 2022. "Gaming’s success translates directly to the success of the states, cities and towns in which we operate," Miller stated. "We are proud to be in 47 U.S. jurisdictions, acting as economic drivers, creating jobs and providing the funding that makes critical public education programs, infrastructure projects, problem gambling resources and more possible."
