U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany on NGOs: 'Must be investigated'

U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) recently took to Twitter to accuse non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of aiding illegal immigration into the United States. In his tweet, Tiffany also criticized the Biden administration while sharing an aerial video of immigrants congregated in the Colorado National Forest.

"…The migrant camp in the Coronado National Forest is now filled with illegal aliens," said Tom Tiffany, U.S Representative (WI-07), according to X. "NGOs – like Catholic Charities & the Red Cross – aiding this invasion must be investigated. The Biden admin allows this to take place on PUBLIC LANDS all paid for by your TAX DOLLARS."

The Heritage Foundation, through its Oversight Project Director Mike Howell, has conducted an investigation that alleges NGOs as a significant source of illegal immigration at the southern border. According to the foundation, these organizations provide accommodation for overflow immigrants and facilitate their entry into the U.S. The funding for these operations predominantly comes from the federal government. The Heritage Foundation also points out that NGO support for illegal migration is a global issue, not just confined to the U.S.

In one episode of "Heritage Explains," it was stated that NGOs receive illegal immigrants from Border Patrol agents who initially apprehend them at the border. Despite being unlawful, these migrants are often brought to the border by cartels with knowledge that U.S. Border Patrol will not deport them. Instead, they are taken to NGO lodgings where they receive assistance in finding ways to travel deeper into the country.

In 2022, U.S. Representative Lance Gooden (R-Texas) expressed his concerns about NGOs' role in illegal immigration in a letter addressed to Catholic Charities USA. Gooden explained that by empowering NGOs to "harbor, transport, and encourage unauthorized aliens to resettle throughout the United States," the federal government allows these organizations to "violate federal law and regulation." He argued against using taxpayer dollars to fund these entities and pointed out that once inside the country, it becomes challenging to monitor these illegally migrated individuals who have been assisted by NGOs.

The Washington Post has also weighed in on this topic, reflecting on Republican lawmakers' skepticism towards faith-based groups providing migrant assistance at the border. These lawmakers argue that faith-based NGOs contribute to increased levels of illegal immigration. The article featured voices both criticizing NGOs for aiding illegal migrants in their journey into the country and defending them on the grounds of the humanitarian crisis at the border.
