Officials from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) recently convened with Congress members to discuss their strategy for equipping military personnel with advanced technology on the battlefield. John Sherman, DOD's Chief Information Officer, stated that the department remains "laser focused" on implementing a zero trust set of guidelines to mitigate organizational cybersecurity risks.

Sherman emphasized the importance of providing secure and resilient software to DOD personnel during his testimony before the House Armed Services' Cyber, Information Technologies and Innovation Subcommittee. He said, "It is critical more than ever that we provide DOD personnel with secure and resilient software when and where they need it." Sherman also acknowledged the urgency of this issue and affirmed the department's commitment to its successful resolution.

According to a DOD news release, Sherman was accompanied at the congressional meeting by Craig Martell, DOD's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, and Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert J. Skinner, Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency. The news release highlighted an escalating cybersecurity risk across Europe and Asia, underscoring DOD's intent to bolster their defense industry networks.

The news release further elaborated on the necessity of implementing a zero trust framework for DOD to surpass traditional network security measures. This framework would empower the department to counteract adversary activities, diminish exposure to cyberattacks, facilitate risk management, and enable data sharing.

Reflecting on his previous testimony before Congress, Sherman said: "When I testified last year, the department was just beginning the enterprise cloud journey and I'm happy to report significant and successful progress." He added that guidance has been published by DOD to streamline cloud contracting and reduce contract sprawl across the department.

Sherman also revealed in the news release that measures are being implemented by DOD to modernize information technology through cloud computing and software. The Defense Information Services Agency has awarded over 47 task orders related to the department's Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability contract, with more than 50 additional orders in progress.

Lt. Gen. Skinner reiterated the importance of ensuring secure and resilient software for DOD personnel, regardless of their location. He said, "[I]t is critical that we ensure that DOD personnel have secure and resilient software regardless of where they are located."
