CFTC’s Energy and Environmental Markets Advisory Committee Gathers in Kansas City for Crucial Meeting

The Energy and Environmental Markets Advisory Committee (EEMAC) is set to convene on April 10, 2024, at the University of Missouri – Kansas City in Kansas City, Mo. The meeting, sponsored by CFTC Commissioner Summer K. Mersinger, will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (CDT) and is open to the public both in person and virtually, space permitting.

Commissioner Mersinger highlighted the focus of the upcoming meeting, stating, “The last few EEMAC meetings focused on the metal and mineral markets and the crucial role of those commodities in the transition to renewable energy. I am looking forward to the discussion at this meeting about longstanding, traditional energy markets—crude oil and power markets—and how the state of those markets ultimately affect the price of energy and the cost to U.S. consumers.”

The agenda for the meeting includes discussions on the federal prudential financial regulators’ proposed rules implementing Basel III and its implications for the derivatives market. Additionally, there will be presentations on the state of crude oil markets, the future of power markets, and updates from the EEMAC subcommittees on traditional energy infrastructure and metals markets.

Members of the public can participate by watching a live webcast or listening via conference call. Those requiring special accommodations due to a disability should contact Lauren Fulks, the EEMAC Secretary, for assistance.

Following the meeting, individuals have the opportunity to submit written statements until April 17, 2024, by visiting CFTC.gov. These statements will be made available to the public, including publication on the website.

The EEMAC is one of five active Advisory Committees overseen by the CFTC, established to provide advice and recommendations on regulatory and market issues impacting U.S. markets. These committees foster communication between the Commission, market participants, regulators, and academics.
