Hudson Institute China Center Director Miles Yu said "there is always a hypocritical side" with each of China's claims for peace and relationships with neighbors.

"Well of course, China always says they are for cooperation and China wants to be nice with people as long as those people are completely capitulating to Chinese demands," Yu said on a recent edition of the China Insider Podcast. "In the case of the Philippines, for example, they always reached out, sends olive branch to Manilla to Filipino leaders, as long as the Filipinos do not object to China’s territory on American demand in the South China Sea."

"That’s why there is always a hypocritical side of China’s claim for peaceful coexistence and cooperation," Yu said.

The April 9 episode of the podcast focused on the impact of the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan, as well as security development in the South China Sea.

China Insider podcast is hosted by Miles Yu, a senior fellow and the director of the China Center. The weekly show is produced by the Hudson Institute's China Center and addresses issues involving China as well as providing commentary on recent news.

Yu is a professor at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, teaching East Asia military and naval history. He specializes in Chinese military culture, historical relations between the U.S. and China, and U.S. policy on China. He previously served as the China policy adviser under Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
