US Department of Labor Recovers $447K in Back Wages and Damages for 60 Grocery Workers

The U.S. Department of Labor has recovered $447,952 in back wages and damages for 60 workers after a federal investigation found that a Kern County employer had denied them overtime pay. The affected employees were excluded from overtime eligibility, leading to a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

According to Wage and Hour Division District Director Cesar Avila in Sacramento, "The U.S. Department of Labor is committed to ensuring that all workers receive a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work." The division was able to recover $223,976 in unpaid overtime wages along with an equal amount in liquidated damages. Additionally, a civil money penalty of $24,210 was assessed due to the willful nature of the violations.

Avila further emphasized the division's dedication to protecting workers' rights and assisting employers in understanding their obligations to prevent such violations. He encouraged individuals with inquiries to reach out for help.
