The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has taken action against the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) terrorist group for their involvement in the hostage-taking of U.S. persons in West Africa.
Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson expressed the severity of JNIM's actions, stating that they "rely on hostage-taking and wrongful detention of civilians in order to gain leverage and instill fear, creating anguish and misery for the victims and their families." Nelson also affirmed that the Treasury will use all available tools to hold accountable those responsible for holding U.S. citizens hostage.
The sanctions target specific individuals within JNIM, including Sidan ag Hitta and Jafar Dicko, who played key roles in coordinating negotiations for the release of hostages and supervising the detention of a U.S. national, respectively.
The sanctions imposed today block all property and interests in property of the designated individuals in the U.S. or under the control of U.S. persons. This action is part of the broader efforts to combat terrorist groups like JNIM and ensure the safety of U.S. citizens abroad.
