The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a $362 million loan to CelLink Corporation (CelLink) to support the manufacturing of essential components for electric vehicles (EVs) at a new facility in Georgetown, Texas. The loan will help finance the production of flexible circuit wiring harnesses that are crucial for EV assembly, with the facility expected to create over 1,300 jobs.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm highlighted the importance of domestic manufacturing of EV components, stating, "EV sales have quadrupled since President Biden took office...underscoring why it’s essential for the United States to harness manufacturing of all the key EV components."
CelLink's flex harnesses are designed to be lighter, smaller, quicker to produce, and more cost-effective than traditional wiring harnesses, addressing the need for domestic production of these components. The company's technology is expected to improve EV efficiency, reduce vehicle weight, and lower manufacturing costs.
To support President Biden's clean energy agenda, CelLink is also committed to developing a Community Benefits Plan to ensure community and labor engagement, in line with the Justice40 Initiative. The company is partnering with various organizations to recruit and provide competitive wages and benefits to full-time hires.
The loan to CelLink aligns with President Biden's goal of onshoring and re-shoring domestic manufacturing of critical technologies for a clean energy transportation future. The DOE's Loan Programs Office (LPO) is facilitating investments to strengthen the nation's competitiveness, supply chains, and create jobs in the clean energy sector.
This announcement marks the latest in a series of loans under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) program, supporting the administration's aim for half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 to be zero-emissions vehicles. The DOE's efforts in attracting applications for projects across the country demonstrate a growing interest in advancing clean energy technologies.
