WASHINGTON – Global tech trade association ITI has expressed its stance on the U.S. Senate's consideration of H.R. 7888, the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act. In a statement issued by ITI's Senior Vice President of Policy and General Counsel John Miller, the association highlighted its support for the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA 702) for protecting national security.
Miller emphasized the importance of lawmakers understanding the implications of a specific amendment in the U.S. House-passed bill that alters the definition of 'electronic communications service provider.' He stated, "It is critically important that lawmakers fully understand the implications of an expansively drafted amendment included in the U.S. House-passed bill that redefines ‘electronic communications service provider’."
Regarding the Department of Justice's acknowledgment of using the new authority narrowly and affecting a limited number of companies, Miller pointed out that outstanding concerns need to be addressed in statute. He expressed gratitude towards Chairman Warner for his commitment to enhancing the provision before the next sunset of FISA authorities.
The ITI remains vigilant in advocating for the necessary improvements to ensure the protection of national security while upholding the rights and responsibilities of electronic communications service providers.
