The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the winners of the 34th National Science Bowl®, a nationwide academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Students from Lexington High School in Massachusetts and BASIS Independent Bellevue in Washington emerged victorious in this prestigious competition.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm congratulated the winning teams, stating, "Congratulations to the wonderfully brilliant minds from BASIS Independent Bellevue and Lexington High School for winning the 2024 National Science Bowl – you faced fierce competition and persevered." Granholm added, "Our clean energy future will be in great hands with the next generation of STEM leaders – we can’t wait to see what you all dream up next."
In the high school category, Lexington High School triumphed over North Hollywood High School by correctly answering a challenging question about sunspots. Lexington High School's team members include Damon Gurvich, Shreyas Ekanathan, Anuprabha Dandapat, Evin Liang, and David Zhou, coached by Nick Gould.
Lexington High School won $5,000 for their school's science department, while the second-place team also received $5,000. Additionally, the top 16 teams each received $1,000 for their schools’ science departments.
In the middle school competition, BASIS Independent Bellevue emerged victorious by defeating Hopkins Junior High School. The winning middle school team members are Gordon Bu, David Xiao, Katherine Long, Kevin Wu, and Timothy Wu, coached by Liping Ke and Ning Wu.
Both the high school and middle school winning teams received $5,000 each, with the top 16 teams also getting $1,000 for their schools’ science departments.
The National Science Bowl® is a highly anticipated event that draws more than 10,000 middle and high school competitors annually. Since its inception in 1991, approximately 344,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® Finals, paving the way for future leaders in science, math, and engineering.
The DOE's Office of Science oversees the National Science Bowl® and sponsors the finals competition, providing a platform for young minds to showcase their talents in the field of STEM.
