China Committee Eyes Supply Chain, Biotech as Moolenaar Takes Helm

WASHINGTON DC — The House select committee on U.S.-China competition, now under the new leadership of Michigan Republican Rep. John Moolenaar, is setting its focus on crucial tech, defense, economic, and foreign policy matters following recent legislative successes.

Chairman John Moolenaar expressed his commitment to safeguarding American interests, stating, "We will examine the most critical areas of our supply chain so we can reduce our dependence on the CCP." This strategic approach aligns with efforts to counter Chinese influence and protect vital sectors from potential threats.

Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi underscored the committee's efforts to address concerning practices within specific companies, advocating for a bill that would restrict federal research funds from reaching U.S. companies engaging with Chinese biotech entities. The targeted companies include MGI, Complete Genomics, WuXi AppTec, and BGI Group and its subsidiaries, as highlighted by Krishnamoorthi.

Additionally, Virginia Republican Rep. Rob Wittman commended the committee's focus on deterring a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan, emphasizing it as a significant achievement within the committee's agenda.

As the committee under Moolenaar's leadership delves into these critical issues, its work remains pivotal in shaping U.S. policies towards China and safeguarding national interests amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.
