DOD preparing to explain $849.8 billion fiscal year 2025 budget to Congress

The Department of Defense (DOD) is preparing to present its proposed $849.8 billion fiscal year 2025 budget request before Congress. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are keen to understand the development of the budget, which emphasizes people, teamwork, and security.

According to a DOD news release, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III explained to lawmakers at the House Armed Services Committee that the DOD budget request is aimed at strengthening allied relationships, caring for service members and their families, and defending the nation—these being the primary objectives for the DOD. The fiscal year 2025 will span from Oct. 1, 2024, through Sept 30, 2025. Approximately $33.7 billion has been set aside for the department's space initiatives and $14.5 billion will be directed towards cybersecurity measures.

Austin said during his testimony, "Our budget request for fiscal year 2025 will advance all three of these priorities." He further added that "The president's request will invest in cutting-edge capabilities across all domains. That includes $48.1 billion for naval and shipbuilding capabilities, $61.2 billion to reinforce U.S. air dominance, and $13 billion to bolster Army and Marine Corps combat capabilities."

In addition to these investments, the department plans to modernize America's nuclear triad with an investment of $49.1 billion. This modernization involves intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and air-launched cruise missiles that can be launched from bomber aircrafts as stated in the news release. The funds also prioritize developments on both the Columbia-class submarine and the B-21 bomber.

Austin emphasized that "This budget request will support our outstanding troops and their families." He mentioned plans for "raising base pay and housing allowances; investing in better housing; making childcare more affordable; and funding vital work to prevent sexual assault and suicide in the military." Austin also highlighted the strategic advantage of their global network of allies and partners, evident in "our strengthening ties across the Indo-Pacific, in today's expanded and united NATO, and in the 50-country Ukraine Defense Contact Group that I convene."
