The EPA Region 7 recently held an Environmental Justice Tour and Listening Session in Omaha, Nebraska on May 6, 2024. The event was organized in collaboration with the Douglas County Health Department and Omaha Chamber of Commerce.
EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister participated in the tour alongside representatives from various communities and organizations in Omaha focusing on environmental justice issues. McCollister emphasized the importance of engaging with local leaders to understand their concerns firsthand, aiming to shape future actions promoting clean air, water, and land accessibility for all residents of Omaha.
The initiative aimed to gather insights from community leaders about areas in Omaha with environmental justice challenges and provide them with a platform to express their worries directly to the EPA. During the tour, McCollister and community leaders visited specific locations to deepen their understanding, later discussed during the listening session.
Notable participants included organizations such as Black Men United, Charles Drew Health Center, and various academic institutions and community groups. The event underscored the significance of environmental justice, ensuring equal treatment and involvement of all individuals in environmental decision-making processes, regardless of background.
