The Department of Energy of the United States of America and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye issued a joint statement on May 8, 2024, following a meeting between U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar in Washington, DC.
The statement highlighted the importance of the U.S.- Türkiye Strategic Mechanism, launched in 2021 to strengthen bilateral relations, and the commitment of both countries to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. The parties aim to enhance strategic cooperation in the energy sector and held the first meeting of the US- Türkiye Energy and Climate Dialogue (ECD) on May 8, 2024.
The establishment of the ECD is intended to promote cooperation between the United States and Türkiye in addressing climate change, enhancing energy security, and advancing economic and trade objectives. The dialogue will focus on clean energy, energy efficiency, grid resilience, natural gas, regional cooperation, and clean energy finance.
The ECD will operate through four main working groups and is expected to intensify energy cooperation between the two countries.
