Spokesperson Matthew Miller reported that Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken had a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. During the call, Blinken reaffirmed the U.S.'s unwavering commitment to Israel's security and their mutual goal of defeating Hamas. The two officials discussed the current situation in Gaza and ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages.
Blinken also reiterated the U.S.'s opposition to a significant military ground operation in Rafah, where over one million people have sought refuge. He emphasized the pressing need to safeguard civilians and aid workers in Gaza. Additionally, he urged Minister Gallant to ensure assistance can reach Gaza and help address distribution challenges within Gaza as Israel continues its pursuit of Hamas targets.
