The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the availability of $12 million in additional funds aimed at improving job quality and expanding access to good jobs in critical industries. This initiative places an emphasis on training for jobs in the care economy, such as home, elder, and childcare.

This second round of Critical Sectors Job Quality grants is a response to the increased demand for workers in industries that are essential to a revitalized economy. Historically, these sectors have been characterized by low-wage jobs with fewer benefits, less worker protections, and greater instability.

Successful applicants will utilize the funding to develop and employ training programs that align with the Good Jobs Principles outlined by the departments of Labor and Commerce.

Acting Secretary Julie Su stated, “The Biden-Harris administration knows that good jobs change lives and these grants will help to do just that.” She further explained how this initiative fits into broader economic goals: “As President Biden continues to build an economy from the middle out and the bottom up, the Department of Labor is working tirelessly to ensure that jobs created by the administration’s historic investments are good, quality jobs. This additional round of funding of our Critical Sectors Job Quality grants will help improve the quality of jobs in high-demand industries that will continue to drive our historic economic growth.”

Administered by the department’s Employment and Training Administration (ETA), the Critical Sectors Job Quality Grant Program emphasizes strong partnerships involving industry and worker voices collectively. The aim is to improve job quality and increase successful outcomes, particularly for people from historically underserved communities. In line with ETA’s Demonstration Grants, this funding builds on research and evidence-based models to enhance results for the workforce system.

More information about applying for this funding opportunity can be found on their website.
