Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues, Julie Turner, is set to travel to the Republic of Korea (ROK) from May 21-25, 2024. The visit will see her participating in the Asian Leadership Conference in Seoul, where she will engage with ROK government officials, civil society representatives, and North Korean escapees.
Turner's agenda is focused on reinforcing the U.S. commitment to addressing North Korea’s division of families. She plans to connect with relatives of abductees, detainees, and un-repatriated POWs in a bid to shed light on these pressing issues.
Furthermore, Turner's itinerary includes a series of speeches, meetings, and site visits where she will discuss the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) human rights abuses and their implications for international peace and security. The Special Envoy will highlight the need for greater supply chain due diligence while drawing attention to the plight of families of ROK citizens who have been abducted and detained by the DPRK. She will also address issues related to family separation caused by DPRK’s policies.
