Privacy watchdog raises concerns over facial recognition at sporting events

Facial recognition technology is being widely used at sporting events, according to a recent statement by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC). Jake Wiener, counsel at EPIC, expressed concerns about the implications of this technology in such settings.

“Facial recognition is dangerous when it makes mistakes, and even more dangerous when it works perfectly,” Wiener stated. He emphasized that sports venues are particularly unsuitable for facial recognition due to the close ties between sports, speech, protest, and personal identity.

Wiener further argued that these technologies could "over-criminalize harmless behaviors, lead to wrongful arrests, and suppress speech."
