Washington, D.C. — The upcoming G7 summit in Italy is seen as a crucial platform to reinforce democratic values and restore trust in international institutions through decisive action.
A new column from the Center for American Progress outlines five critical priorities for the G7 to address at this week's summit:
1. Agree on a plan to use interest from frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
2. Focus and coordinate food security efforts by scaling up successful programs.
3. Support a proposed ceasefire and chart a path to Israeli-Palestinian security and peace.
4. Lay the groundwork for COP29 by setting a new climate finance target.
5. Commit to reforming multilateral institutions and providing debt relief.
“The G7 summit is a pivotal opportunity for the world’s leading democracies to tackle pressing global challenges,” said Allison McManus, managing director for the National Security and International Policy department at CAP and co-author of the column. “Addressing these priorities will go a long way toward paving the way for a more secure, prosperous, and democratic future.”
