President Biden establishes Economic Diplomacy Action Group to boost US competitiveness

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Last week, President Biden signed a Presidential Memorandum establishing the Economic Diplomacy Action Group (EDAG), a new whole-of-government initiative aimed at strengthening U.S. commercial diplomacy on the global stage and expanding economic prosperity domestically. This initiative is intended to support American workers and create jobs.

The EDAG will ensure that U.S. foreign policy continues to create opportunities for American businesses globally and attract foreign investment into sectors vital to U.S. national security. The group will advance U.S. economic priorities, including supply chain resilience, and deepen shared prosperity with allies and partners. To further its mission of promoting U.S. exports, the EDAG will establish a trade expansion advisory committee comprising selected representatives from the private sector, labor, and other organizations to provide comment and advice.

The formation of the EDAG stems from the Championing American Business through Diplomacy Act of 2019, which was passed to bolster U.S. commercial competitiveness by strengthening government support for private sector interests internationally. The Secretary of State will chair the EDAG in close consultation with the Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative.
