Rep. Mark Amodei (R-NV) stated that the proposed Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2025 would assist border security operations in facing the "unprecedented flow of migrants." Amodei made the statement on June 26 during floor consideration of the bill.
"This bill prioritizes investments that make the border more secure and makes appropriate cuts to policies and programs that we know do not work," said Amodei, U.S. Representative for Nevada. "We have heard from the professionals in the field—our Border Patrol agents and CBP officers—who are being crushed dealing with the unprecedented flow of migrants day after day."
According to Amodei’s remarks, the Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2025 would provide $64.8 billion to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), $2.9 billion more than was allotted for FY24. The bill aims to enhance border security through various measures, including increased Border Patrol agents, continuation of border wall construction, drug detection systems, and transportation of illegal migrants out of the country. Additionally, it includes investments for national safety beyond border security.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, there have been 1.69 million encounters at the southwest border to date during FY2024.
In 2021, President Biden revoked President Trump's emergency order for continued construction of the border wall, according to BBC News. The Homeland Security Appropriation Act of 2025 would continue this construction.
Amodei said this legislation would provide the resources needed to "change course" at the southwest border "not through gimmicks, but through real policy and funding changes."
Amodei was elected as the U.S. Representative for Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District and has served since then, according to his website. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee.
