Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas delivered remarks at the White House Press Briefing in Washington, DC, on July 15, 2024.
"Thank you very much, Karine. Good afternoon," began Secretary Mayorkas.
He expressed gratitude that former President Trump is safe and extended thoughts and prayers to the family of Corey Comperatore and those injured on Saturday. He praised the United States Secret Service agents for their prompt response to the threat at the campaign event.
"We unequivocally condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the violence our nation witnessed that day. Such acts are unacceptable in our country and in our democracy," said Mayorkas.
He highlighted that both President Biden and former President Trump face constant threats, describing the current threat environment as heightened and dynamic. The Secretary emphasized that maintaining their safety is a top priority for federal agencies including the Secret Service and FBI.
In response to recent events, President Biden has directed enhanced protection measures for Robert Kennedy Jr., according to Mayorkas. He noted that prior to last weekend's incident, security for former President Trump had already been increased due to evolving threats and his imminent nomination at the Republican National Convention (RNC).
Mayorkas refrained from discussing specific protective measures but confirmed that additional personnel, resources, technology, and capabilities have been deployed. "At the RNC, we have steadily increased the implementation of significant physical and technical enhancements at every protective venue," he stated.
He acknowledged efforts across various law enforcement agencies including Homeland Security Investigations, Transportation Security Administration, state and local law enforcement officers who have been mobilized for convention security.
Addressing the attempted assassination of former President Trump, Mayorkas mentioned an independent review directed by President Biden to scrutinize actions taken by law enforcement before, during, and after the incident. The aim is to identify corrective actions needed for future protection of national leaders.
"The men and women of the Secret Service have one of the most solemn and difficult jobs in government," he remarked while acknowledging their sacrifice and bravery demonstrated during Saturday’s event.
The FBI is leading an ongoing criminal investigation into Saturday's tragic event. An independent review will also be conducted to evaluate protection measures taken during the event. Consequently, Mayorkas declined further comments on details under investigation or review.
With that statement concluded: "I will take your questions."
