Secretary Antony J. Blinken and Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez met on July 17, 2024, to discuss the ongoing partnership between the United States and Panama. The meeting coincided with the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity.
Secretary Blinken emphasized the significance of the relationship between the two nations, highlighting their cooperation in promoting inclusive economic growth, modernizing economies, and addressing security and sustainability challenges. "We have been, remain, and will be the closest of partners in advancing so many of the things that people in both of our countries are looking for," he stated.
Panama's role in international organizations was acknowledged by Blinken, who also mentioned joint efforts to manage irregular migration safely and humanely. "Javier, I’m really grateful to you. I think your first day in office you signed with Secretary Mayorkas —" said Blinken before being interrupted by Martínez-Acha confirming: "Yes, indeed."
Blinken continued by expressing gratitude for Panama's collaboration on repatriation agreements and broader issues. He underscored the importance of democracies working together to address common challenges effectively.
Foreign Minister Martínez-Acha reciprocated the sentiments, conveying greetings from President Mulino and emphasizing shared values and goals. "We defend democracy, and we want to cooperate in the major challenges that our vision and the world will face in the future," he said. He also highlighted Panama's role as a member of the Security Council this year.
Martínez-Acha expressed confidence in tackling global issues under President Mulino's leadership with U.S. support. "We share values, we are partners, and we understand the importance of our relationships," he concluded.
The meeting ended with mutual expressions of appreciation for each other's time.
