The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) has commended the Government of Vietnam for approving the "Decree on the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA)" on July 3, marking a notable step towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The policy, supported by both domestic and international private sector entities, provides clear mechanisms for large energy consumers to procure clean energy directly.
This new directive permits businesses in Vietnam to buy renewable power from private electricity producers, thereby promoting private sector investment and aligning corporate emission reduction targets with Vietnam's clean energy and economic growth objectives.
ENR’s Clean Energy Demand Initiative (CEDI), in collaboration with the Clean Energy Buyers Alliance (CEBA), will continue to facilitate discussions between the private sector and the Vietnamese government to support DPPA implementation and foster clean energy investments in the country.
CEDI is a public/private platform that connects countries with companies committed to operating with clean energy. It aims to promote policies, regulations, and procurement frameworks that support sustainable and affordable energy systems. The approval of Vietnam’s DPPA is expected to unlock up to $8 billion in clean energy investments in Vietnam.
