The U.S. Department of Labor has announced an award exceeding $1 million to Texas aimed at providing employment and training services for individuals affected by the permanent layoffs at the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin.

Administered by the department’s Employment and Training Administration, this funding represents the first increment of a National Dislocated Worker Grant totaling up to $3,230,050 awarded to the Texas Workforce Commission. The grant will enable the state to offer retraining and skills development for displaced workers across Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Llano, Travis, and Williamson counties.

Supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014, National Dislocated Worker Grants supply state or local boards with necessary funding for direct services and assistance in regions experiencing significant economic dislocation events that create workforce needs surpassing available resources.
