HUD awards $6 million to combat home health hazards

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the allocation of $6 million to two nonprofit organizations and a city government to address home health hazards affecting children and families. This marks the second round of funding for this program, following previous grant announcements on April 9, 2024. The funding aims to improve community conditions by renovating older housing, preserving affordable living spaces, and enhancing the health of residents.

“Today, we are renewing our commitment to improving the lives of children and other vulnerable individuals by eliminating health and safety hazards where they live,” said HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. “These grants provide a critical resource to communities to provide healthy and sustainable housing.”

The grants are part of HUD's Healthy Homes Production Grant Program, which takes a comprehensive approach to addressing multiple childhood diseases and injuries by focusing on various housing-related hazards simultaneously. The initiative targets privately owned low-income rental or owner-occupied housing, particularly units where families with children, older adults aged 62 years or older, or persons with disabilities reside.

The second round of funding is distributed as follows:

- Community Action Council of Howard County in Maryland will receive $2 million for 200 proposed units.

- The City of Lancaster in Pennsylvania will receive $2 million for 145 proposed units.

- Adult and Youth United Development Association, Inc. in Texas will receive $2 million for 170 proposed units.

Lead and Healthy Homes grants are available to non-profits, for-profit firms, state and local governments, federally recognized Indian Tribes, colleges, and universities within the United States. Information regarding applications for future rounds can be found at Grants.gov.
