Kamala Harris, in her tenure as California’s attorney general, took significant steps to address data privacy violations. This was years before the state enacted one of the nation's most stringent consumer data protection laws. Harris established a Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit within her department, which garnered her commendation from privacy advocacy groups critical of Congress' inaction on privacy issues.
Organizations such as the Center for Democracy & Technology and the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) recognized her efforts, with EPIC awarding her for her work in 2015.
“Given her past positions, we expect that a Harris administration would push for guardrails to ensure the use of AI is rights-preserving and advances equity, be strong on data privacy issues, and hold Big Tech to account to advance consumer and civil rights,” EPIC Deputy Director Caitriona Fitzgerald stated.
