On Monday, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo convened a roundtable discussion with investors to address non-market actions from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) that threaten to distort the market for mature node, or "legacy," semiconductors. Secretary Raimondo expressed concern over practices by the PRC aimed at overproducing legacy chips and hindering U.S. companies and those in allied countries from competing fairly.
Raimondo emphasized that securing the semiconductor supply chain is both an economic and national security priority. She reiterated the various measures being taken by the Department of Commerce and the federal government, including imposing targeted tariffs on semiconductors imported from the PRC, conducting an industrial base survey of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, collaborating with international partners, and restricting the use of PRC semiconductors in U.S. government procurement.
Investors at the meeting discussed how companies are addressing risks related to oversupply and overconcentration, as well as how additional U.S. government actions could effectively support resilient semiconductor supply chains.
