Under Secretary Zeya meets with Dalai Lama in New York

On August 21, 2024, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights and Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Uzra Zeya traveled to New York City for an audience with His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama. Under Secretary Zeya was accompanied by Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Democracy and Human Rights Kelly Razzouk.

During the meeting, she conveyed best wishes from President Biden for His Holiness’s good health and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to advancing the human rights of Tibetans. She also expressed support for efforts to preserve their distinct historical, linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage. Under Secretary Zeya acknowledged His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s lifelong dedication to promoting nonviolence and compassion.

The discussion included topics such as Tibetan cultural preservation, addressing human rights abuses in Tibet, and supporting the resumption of dialogue between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and His Holiness's representatives.
