Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on August 21, 2024. The conversation focused on ongoing efforts to negotiate a ceasefire agreement aimed at alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and securing the release of hostages.
Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel stated, "The Secretary underscored that the bridging proposal presented by negotiators addresses the remaining gaps in a manner that allows for swift implementation of the deal." Both parties affirmed that no regional actors should take actions to undermine these efforts and welcomed the next round of talks in Cairo.
Additionally, Secretary Blinken expressed gratitude to Amir Sheikh Tamim for Qatar’s crucial role in mediating negotiations and promoting regional peace.
The discussion also covered continued efforts to end the war in Sudan. Both leaders emphasized the importance of allowing unhindered humanitarian access to Sudanese civilians.
