Uzra Zeya to discuss human rights during Malaysia-Vietnam visit

Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya will travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Hanoi, Vietnam from August 25-31, 2024. The visit aims to engage partners on human rights, humanitarian cooperation, and human-centered civilian security.

In Kuala Lumpur, Under Secretary Zeya will convey appreciation for U.S.-Malaysia cooperation based on democratic values and respect for human rights and the rule of law. She plans to engage senior government officials, civil society organizations, and media representatives on the United States’ commitment to governance reform and strategic priorities such as combating trafficking in persons and anti-corruption efforts. Additionally, discussions will cover meeting global humanitarian needs and supporting Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship.

In Hanoi, Under Secretary Zeya will highlight the strength of the U.S.-Vietnam relationship in achieving shared goals of peace, stability, cooperation, and prosperity in the region. During meetings with senior Vietnamese officials, she will underscore the United States’ commitment to the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This includes promoting human rights such as freedom of religion or belief, supporting marginalized groups, and coordinating efforts to address global challenges like trafficking in persons and other transnational crimes. Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary Allison Peters will join her.
