Today in Dakar, Senegal, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration Julieta Valls Noyes announced more than $64 million in humanitarian assistance for Sub-Saharan Africa. This announcement follows recent commitments by Under Secretary Uzra Zeya, Ambassador Jeffrey Prescott, and Ambassador Michael J. Adler, bringing the total U.S. humanitarian assistance in Sub-Saharan Africa to over $3.8 billion in Fiscal Year 2024. The United States is the largest single humanitarian donor to Africa/Sub-Saharan Africa globally.
This funding will enable U.S. humanitarian partners to address urgent needs of refugees and other displaced populations across Sub-Saharan Africa. It will also support durable solutions such as voluntary return in safety and dignity and local integration within host communities.
The United States acknowledges the efforts made by Senegal and other countries in the region to welcome refugees, returnees, and internally displaced persons into their communities. The Senegalese government's incorporation of refugees into national social and health services has contributed significantly to regional stability. The United States encourages other governments to adopt similar practices for refugee inclusion and sustainable solutions.
