The following is the Joint Statement released by the Governments of the United States and New Zealand on the occasion of the New Zealand – United States Strategic Dialogue in Auckland, New Zealand.

New Zealand Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade Bede Corry and United States Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell met in Auckland, New Zealand for the New Zealand-United States Strategic Dialogue. The annual Strategic Dialogue is an opportunity to celebrate and deepen the long-standing and historic partnership between New Zealand and the United States. This meeting underscored the deep commitment of both countries to shared values and to working ever more closely together to support them, in an increasingly complex Indo-Pacific environment.

Referring to the Joint Declaration by United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters in April 2024, the Strategic Dialogue highlighted the importance to both countries of investing in their bilateral relationship and proud tradition of partnership. As part of that investment, they committed to maintaining a close and trusted security partnership, enhancing defense collaboration, and growing their trade and economic relationship. This commitment was further emphasized during President Biden’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Luxon in Washington on the margins of the NATO Summit, where both leaders reiterated the importance of a strong and resilient partnership in facing global challenges.

Secretary Corry and Deputy Secretary Campbell noted that they were meeting at a time when global challenges are compelling New Zealand and the United States to strengthen cooperation in support of shared values and interests, including championing rule of law, democracy, human rights, trade and investment, and strong people-to-people connections.

Secretary Corry and Deputy Secretary Campbell launched the New Zealand-United States Dialogue on Critical and Emerging Technologies. This will facilitate links between New Zealand's technology sectors with those in the United States, explore new avenues for research cooperation, and focus on opportunities to address regulatory issues pertaining to their technology partnership. The launch will enhance economic connections through technology innovation—a fitting means to celebrate 150 years since American scientists visited New Zealand for observing Venus's transit.

The United States and New Zealand committed to pursuing focused collaboration on advancing safe AI innovation; secure biotechnologies; quantum computing; reaffirming that digital economy technologies act as essential enablers for these emerging fields.

Secretary Corry also welcomed April 2024’s first-ever US-New Zealand Space Dialogue which demonstrated robust outer space cooperation between both nations while looking forward to further strengthening bilateral collaboration.

The dialogue focused on developments within Pacific regions including Indo-Pacific strategic environment issues like Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine along with regional economic concerns where they expressed grave concern over destabilizing actions by Chinese vessels towards Philippines vessels emphasizing international law principles such as freedom navigation peaceful dispute resolution highlighting peace stability across Taiwan Strait encouraging cross-Strait issue resolutions peacefully increasing interoperability addressing common challenges expressing strong support cooperative relationships recognizing importance regional stability prosperity continuing doing more together supporting priorities centrality Forum Strategy Blue Continent maritime cooperation economic prosperity infrastructure reflecting vision resilient thriving community committed upholding conditions enabling region thrive working like-minded partners frameworks connectivity Euro-Atlantic Indo-Pacific security stability welcoming deepening coordination among NATO Partners affirming initiative enhancing regional security acknowledging exploring potential advanced capability projects under Pillar II
