The U.S. Department of Education has announced over $28 million in new awards under the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) program aimed at recruiting, preparing, developing, and retaining a diverse educator workforce nationwide. The announcement was accompanied by the release of new data detailing Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) approvals across all states.

The TQP program funds teacher preparation initiatives in high-need communities at various educational levels and includes teaching residency programs for individuals with strong academic and professional backgrounds. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona emphasized the importance of well-prepared and supported teachers, stating, “Nothing matters more in public education than making sure every child has access to great teachers.”

This announcement coincides with Secretary Cardona's 2024 Back to School Bus Tour, themed "Fighting for Public Education," which highlights the use of Biden-Harris Administration investments to enhance public education.

The administration has increased annual funding for the TQP program by 34%, working alongside states and the U.S. Department of Labor to expand registered apprenticeship programs for teachers from zero in 2021 to 38 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico today.

A detailed list of FY24 grantees includes institutions such as University Corporation at Monterey Bay ($1.47 million), Cal State LA University Auxiliary Services ($1.88 million), and Tulare County Office of Education ($3.03 million).

Additionally, new PSLF data shows significant borrower relief efforts since October 2021, including $69.2 billion in forgiveness for nearly 947,000 borrowers. This marks a substantial increase from just 7,000 approvals at the start of this administration.

Improvements to the PSLF Program include management through StudentAid.gov starting July 1, 2024, simplifying processes for borrowers.

The Biden-Harris Administration continues efforts to reduce student debt burdens through various initiatives such as increasing Pell Grant maximums by $900 and addressing issues with income-driven repayment plans.

State-by-state PSLF discharge data reveals significant borrower relief across various regions, with California leading at $6.29 billion forgiven for over 81,000 borrowers.

Data as of mid-August 2024 confirms ongoing commitment towards educational equity and financial relief for students and educators alike.
