The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Eastern District of New York announced that Linda Sun has been indicted in a Brooklyn federal court. Sun is being charged with violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy.

According to the DOJ Eastern District of New York, Sun, while holding high-ranking positions in New York State government, allegedly acted as an undisclosed agent for the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). She is accused of influencing state policies to benefit the PRC and CCP, such as blocking Taiwanese officials' access to New York leaders and facilitating unauthorized PRC delegation meetings. Sun also allegedly provided false invitation letters for PRC officials to enter the U.S.

"As alleged, while appearing to serve the people of New York as Deputy Chief of Staff within the New York State Executive Chamber, the defendant and her husband actually worked to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP," stated United States Attorney Breon Peace. "The illicit scheme enriched the defendant’s family to the tune of millions of dollars. Our Office will act decisively to prosecute those who serve as undisclosed agents of a foreign government."

Sun is further accused of receiving undisclosed economic benefits, including luxury purchases and real estate, in exchange for her actions. She and co-conspirator Hu allegedly laundered money through fraudulent bank accounts and real estate deals. The charges remain allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Breon Peace, appointed by President Biden, serves as the 48th U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, overseeing federal criminal and civil cases in a district covering Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. He supervises 160 assistant U.S. attorneys and 120 staff members and is a member of the attorney general's advisory committee.
