The American Medical Association (AMA) has released the CPT 2025 code set, featuring 420 updates, including 270 new codes, 112 deletions, and 38 revisions. The latest version aims to reflect advancements in contemporary clinical practice and ensure that the code set remains a trusted universal language of medicine.

"The CPT code set is the foundation for the efficient and effective exchange of standardized information in a data-driven health system, facilitating the reporting, measuring, analyzing, researching, and benchmarking of medical services and procedures with the goal of delivering better patient care, improved outcomes and lower costs," said AMA President Bruce A. Scott, M.D. "The latest updates to the CPT code set reflect advancements in contemporary clinical practice and ensure the code set fulfills its vital role as the trusted universal language of medicine."

The majority of new codes are assigned to proprietary laboratory analyses (37%), mainly for novel genetic testing. Category III CPT codes for emerging medical services account for about 30% of new codes.

Updates to the CPT code set undergo an open editorial process managed by the CPT Editorial Panel. This independent body convened by the AMA collects input from various sectors within the healthcare community to ensure that CPT content aligns with modern healthcare demands.

Key updates in this year's release include:

Digital Medicine: Remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) services have been revised. Code 98975 now includes digital therapeutic intervention while codes 98976-98978 cover device supply for data access or transmissions supporting RTM.

Augmented/Artificial Intelligence (AI): The AI Taxonomy introduced in 2023 has been applied to category III CPT codes. Seven new category III codes classify AI medical services based on their function—assistive, augmentative, or autonomous—in tasks such as electrocardiogram measurements (0902T and 0932T), medical chest imaging (0877T-0880T), and image-guided prostate biopsy (0898T).

General Surgery: Updates include novel approaches in skin grafts for wound care (15011-15018) and advancements in surgical techniques for tumor elimination within the abdomen (49186-49190).

The AMA invites healthcare professionals to attend its virtual event—the CPT & RBRVS 2025 Annual Symposium in November—for guidance on these updates. Additionally, coding books and products are available through Amazon's AMA Storefront.
