The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a reminder to residents of Louisiana to take precautionary measures in anticipation of Hurricane Francine.
Before the hurricane, families are advised to create a communication plan detailing how to contact each other if communications are disrupted, what actions to take if separated, and where to go in case of evacuation. An emergency kit should be prepared with essentials such as canned food, bottled water, first aid supplies, flashlights, pet supplies, and other necessary items. Homeowners should secure or store hazardous materials like cleaning agents, paints, and solvents to prevent chemical spills. Community preparedness discussions with neighbors are also encouraged.
During the storm's development, residents should closely monitor local news and follow all instructions from emergency response officials regarding shelter-in-place or evacuation orders. Families should review their plans and ensure the location of emergency supplies is known. If using a generator, it must be placed outside and away from open windows, doors, or balconies to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
After the hurricane passes, residents should heed instructions from local officials on when it is safe to lift shelter-in-place or evacuation orders. Guidance on handling debris and household hazardous waste will also be provided by responding agencies. Flood waters should be avoided and entry into flooded buildings is discouraged.
